Learning Letter

For my book talk, I think I could have been a little more prepared. I realized after I got my feedback on it that I did do a lot of reading from the handout that I had and that I should have probably created some sort of powerpoint to go off of so it was more interactive with the other kids in the class. Other than that, I think that my book talk was well prepared and well thought out.
For my mini lesson, I felt like I could have improved a lot. I felt really unprepared. I hadn't practiced the lesson, and so I ended up winging most of it time wise and so I felt really unprepared throughout the whole time. If I had to do it again, I would make sure to practice my lesson like how I do for my practicum lessons. I ended up only using 15/20 minutes of my time. I think that I could have used that time to have the students read the poem out loud before they watched the video, since that was one of the ways the other students had suggested to improve.
For my unit plan, I put in an unbelievable amount of work. Literally all quarter, I spent every moment of my free time working on it and developing my ideas. I think that I did a really good job on it. The only category that I feel like I struggled with was the introductory overview. The requirement was to write 3-5 pages and I wrote two and then ran out of what I thought I needed to say.

We covered many theories throughout the class. A few of the parts that really stood out to me were the different graphic organizers that could be used in the classroom as well as the part about including pop culture into the classroom. I think that these are really important parts about reaching out to kids. I think that by being required to include some sort of popular culture into our mini lesson was important and a good way to practice including it. I think that it is important to get used to using these sorts of things in our classroom and so I think that including it in the unit plan would be a good idea as well.

By participating in this, I was able to learn a lot about myself as an educator. We were provided multiple times to sit down and reflect about each time we read about something and reflect each time we did an assignment, which helped me to reflect on my work and improve each time before beginning another task. That was something that I was able to apply to my work in this class, as well as my work that was being completed for my practicum and other classes.

Assignment Template

When reading this article, I found myself reflecting on my own lessons and teaching ideas, which made a few things in this article stand out to me more than others.  This first part that really stood out to me was having the students write in the margins as they read. The first part I believe asked students to label in the left hand margin the summary, introduction, issue or problem being addressed, the author’s main arguments, the author’s examples, and the conclusion. Then the second part asks students to write in the right hand margin their reactions to what the author is saying. They list some possible reactions as personal connections they can make, reflection on the quality of evidence the author offers, and any questions or contradictions they have with what the author is presenting. The first thought that came to mind was that a lot of students cannot write in their textbooks and so this may be something that is hard for them to do. But then I thought that they could do so...

Paulo Freire: Chapter 2 of Pedagogy

This was one of the more interesting articles that we have read. In Paulo Freire’s Chapter Two, he explains the difference between educators who use banking educational methods and educators who are humanist revolutionary educators. “Education is suffering from narration sickness”, he writes. What he is referring to is the way many teachers just talk and talk at students and expect them to absorb all the narration that they’re lecturing at them. He continues further down saying, “His task [the teacher’s] is to fill the student with contents of his narration”. Take note on that…”to fill the student with contents of his narration”. Not to help the students to grow in their learning and develop within the content, but to lead them in a direction of memorization. He makes a reference that compares this sort of educating to depositing money in a bank or trash in the trash can. The students become the trash can or the bank account that the teacher deposits his trash and money into. However...
